NEW YORK – After keeping his private life out of the spotlight for years, David Hyde Pierce has announced his marriage to longtime partner Brian Hargrove . The former "Frasier" star spoke candidly in an appearance on ABC's "The View." Wearing a wedding band , Hyde Pierce revealed they tied the knot "very quietly" in California on Oct. 24. The actor and Hargrove, a producer, are still legally wed despite the California Supreme Court's decision Tuesday to uphold Proposition 8. The gay-marriage ban was approved by voters in November, stopping legal nuptials going forward. Angered by the ruling, Hyde Pierce said Thursday: "It's like, `Oh great, we made the cut.'" SEOUL, South Korea – The U.S. and South Korea put their military forces on high alert Thursday after North Korea renounced the truce keeping the peace between the two Koreas since 1953. The North also accused the U.S. of preparing to attack the isolated communist country in the wake of its second nuclear bomb test , and warned it would retaliate to any hostility with "merciless" and dangerous ferocity. Seoul moved a 3,500-ton destroyer into waters near the Koreas' disputed western maritime border while smaller, high-speed vessels were keeping guard at the front line, South Korean news reports said. The defense ministry said the U.S. and South Korean militaries would increase surveillance activities. Pyongyang , meanwhile, positioned artillery guns along the west coast on its side of the border, the Yonhap news agency said. The Joint Chiefs of Staffs in Seoul refused to confirm the reports. The show of force along the heavily fortified border dividing the two Koreas comes three days after North Korea conducted an underground nuclear test and fired a series of short-range missiles. The test drew immediate condemnation from world leaders and the U.N. Security Council , where ambassadors were discussing a new resolution to punish Pyongyang. President Barack Obama called it a "blatant violation" of international law. In response, South Korea said it would join more than 90 nations that have agreed to stop and inspect vessels suspected of transporting weapons of mass destruction. North Korea called South Korea's participation in the U.S.-led Proliferation Security Initiative a prelude to a naval blockade and a violation of the truce signed to end the three-year war that broke out in Korea in 1950. On Wednesday Pyongyang renounced the 1953 armistice and the following day warned U.S. forces against advancing into its territory. "The northward invasion scheme by the U.S. and the South Korean puppet regime has exceeded the alarming level," the North's main Rodong Sinmun newspaper said in a commentary carried by the official Korean Central News Agency . "A minor accidental skirmish can lead to a nuclear war." The U.S., which has 28,500 troops in South Korea and another 50,000 in Japan, has denied it is planning military action. But U.S. and South Korean troops were placed on their highest alert level for more than two years. The South Korea-U.S. combined forces command rates its surveillance alert on a scale to 5, with 1 being the highest level. On Thursday, the level was raised from 3 to 2, the second-highest level, South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman Won Tae-jae said. He said the last time the alert level was that high was in 2006, when the North conducted its first nuclear test. Won said both militaries were raising their surveillance activities, although he would not explain what that meant. South Korean media reported that the higher alert would involve increased monitoring of North Korea using satellites and navy ships. The U.N. Command on Korea said it would continue to observe the armistice, saying it "remains in force and is binding on all signatories, including North Korea." North Korea has repudiated the armistice several times before, most recently in 2003 and 2006. South Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman Moon Tae-young accused the North of "seriously distorting" the decision to join in the initiative. Seoul has said its military would "respond sternly" to any North Korean provocation, and that it would be able to contain the North with the help of U.S. troops. The South Korean military has dispatched "personnel and equipment deployment" along its land and sea borders, a Joint Chiefs of Staff officer said. He spoke on condition of anonymity citing department policy. He said there has been no particular movement of North Korean troops in border areas. The two Koreas technically remain at war because they signed a truce, not a peace treaty, in 1953. However, North disputes the U.N.-drawn maritime border off their west coast, and used that dispute to provoke deadly naval skirmishes in 1999 and 2002. South Korea 's mass-circulation JoongAng Ilbo newspaper said more anti-air missiles and artillery were dispatched to military bases on islands near the disputed western sea border with North Korea. Yonhap said the destroyer has artillery guns , anti-ship guided missiles , ship-to-air missiles and torpedoes. Air force fighters are were on standby, the report said. North Korea's West Sea fleet has 13 submarines and more than 360 vessels, Yonhap said. The recent flurry of belligerence could reflect an effort by 67-year-old leader Kim Jong Il to boost his standing among his impoverished people. It was also seen as a test of Obama's new administration, and came as two Americans, journalists Euna Lee and Laura Ling, remained in custody in Pyongyang accused of illegal entry and "hostile acts." They face trial in Pyongyang next week. Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso said any new Security Council resolution must be stronger than the one issued after the North's first atomic test in October 2006, and contain sanctions. A Russian Foreign Ministry official said Moscow did not want to see Pyongyang further isolated. Andrei Nesterenko said Russia opposed sanctions but did not object to a U.N. resolution. Hong Hyun-ik, a senior analyst at the Sejong Institute security think tank, said sanctions would not be effective unless China — North Korea 's traditional ally — implemented them. "Kim Jong Il must be scoffing" at the talk of sanctions, he said. They say it improves reading ability by training a specific part of the brain. The Helsinki-based team hopes to make the software available worldwide. The game is suitable for four-to seven-year-olds and could be used at home under parental supervision. Team leader Teija Kujala of the Cognitive Brain Research Unit at the University of Helsinki, Finland, told BBC News Online: "This program is very simple and easy to use and it can be applied in any language. She said: "We observed improvement in reading generally. The brain started to process auditory information better." Learning problems People who are dyslexic may have difficulty with reading, spelling, understanding language they hear, or expressing themselves clearly in speaking or in writing. They are often gifted in other ways. The underlying cause of dyslexia is largely unknown but it is thought to be due to a problem in processing auditory or visual information, or both. To help dyslexic children improve their reading, the scientists developed a computer game based on matching shapes with sounds. A group of seven-year-olds at a Finnish school took part in a pilot study. The children were played sounds of different pitch, duration and intensity, which were represented on screen by a series of rectangles moving up and down with the music. The subjects were asked to follow the pattern of sounds and press the space bar when the last element of the pattern was played. If they got it right, they were greeted with a smiling face. The game led to a significant improvement in reading accuracy and some gain in reading speed in the 24 dyslexic children tested. Underlying cause Further tests showed the training had boosted brain activity in the auditory cortex. This area of the brain is important in the processing of auditory signals or more particularly of speech and language. The work, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, could also shed light on the roots of dyslexia. It suggests that the condition arises from a general problem in the way the brain processes auditory information rather than a specific difficulty in discriminating between sounds used in language. The British Dyslexia Association welcomed the new research. Its policy and local services director Carol Orton said: "This study emphasizes the need for early identification of dyslexia. "We are particularly interested in a strategy that develops pre-requisites for learning and avoids the sense of failure that even very young children experience when they find learning to read hard," she told BBC News Online. McDearmon (Tomah, WI USA) - See all my reviews A note of caution on the tiller: it has two components which I've discovered I don't like. The first is a plastic sprocket gear that transfers power from the motor to the driveline and tines. Guess what happens when the little Garden Wizard gets tangled up in a tree root... yes, it completely strips the teeth out of the plastic gear. (Here you can correctly assume it's very cheap to mold a plastic gear instead of machine a metal one.) Second, the thing that's supposed to help eliminate the gear stripping problem is that Remington has a built-in circuit breaker right on the trigger housing. "How convenient", one might think at first, except that the breaker is made in Indonesia under questionable quality control and that the breaker is only rated at 7 amps. The tiller has a 12 amp motor. Why bother advertising that it has such a great feature like a 12 amp motor when the ciruit breaker shuts it off at less than a 60% load? If you plan to use this product in already tilled and established planting beds, I would say that it's not a bad machine and you'll probably never have a problem with it. If you are trying to break established sod - be forewarned that tree roots or rocks will most likely cause you an instant breakdown. Comment Comment | Permalink | Was this review helpful to you? Yes No ( Report this ) 37 of 37 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars It sure beats doing it by hand! , June 14, 2004 By A Customer I've wanted a garden & landscapetiller for years but didn't want to get into storing gas etc. (my lawnmower, weed whip, hedge trimmer, chain saw and all my other power tools are also electric). I saw this and was sold. It's pretty light so it bounces off hard soil but it's easy to move around the yard. I haven't used the wheels because the handle is so convenient. Using it is like reeling in a large fish. You let it till forward, then pull it back and run over the same area until you reach the desired depth. Tilt left or right to change direction. Removing the tines to remove weeds or clean is easy with the cotter pins. I did break a tine on some stony soil. Oh well. I'd buy it again if I had to do it over. Here's an update after a season of use. I still like the machine. It's great for previously-tilled or loose soil, or small jobs where there are no stones or roots. For a big sod-busting job I had, I rented a big rear-tine machine. The comment by another reviewer on the plastic gear is right on the mark. I stripped mine down to nothing. I think they use a plastic gear so you will break or wear out a $7 part rather than the $100+ transmission or motor. The machine isn't complex to repair and the manual is available on line. Here's the problem, though. The plastic gear I ordered took six weeks to arrive. Here's an update after a three seasons of use. So I've gone through three of those $7 plastic gears and I order more when I'm down to my last one so I don't miss any tilling time. My tines getting pretty worn down but still cut OK. When my clay soil is really dry, I have to water it or the tiller will just bounce off. On really hot days, the breaker pops after only a few minutes of use. I thought it might need lubrication but the transmission looked like it was still full of grease when I got the screw off. The newest problem is that the bolts that hold the motor in place don't stay tight. Eventually, the plastic will get stripped if I can't figure out how to secure the bolts. This may be the death knell for the tiller. I figure I paid about $120 for 3-4 seasons so far, and I'd do it again considering the work it has saved me. Strate (Oceanside, CA) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME) This is my first experience with a tiller, and I needed to till my backyard to prepare for laying sod. I have compacted clay soil about 4 inches below my current topsoil. I did my best to rake and clear out rocks and roots from nearby trees before using this tiller. This tiller is ready to go right out of the box without any assembly. I already purchased an outdoor rated 16 guage ext. cord just for this, so, I immediately spread mulch on top of the existing soil and started tilling. I was very impressed with the power and I noticed while tilling it was kicking out a lot of rocks deap inside the soil and big clay clods. This tiller, also got caught on a heavy root that made a big noise and snapped the root but, once again didn't seem to bother the tiller. After doing a first run I again cleared the rocks that I could see, because I was worried about breaking a tine or something. But, this tiller again did not seem to be bother with the rocks that were still hidden within the soil and it just kicked them out. It is an effort to control once it hits the compacted clay soil, but with arm power of holding/pulling back and forward it ate the clay soil up without a strain on power. List of five-six categories and questions for each category. Fake money (bought at dollar store). The categories I select are usually: Windows 98 Computer History Computer Basics Peripherals Internet Microsoft Office Under those categories you write in dollar amounts just like the real jeopardy game on ABC. I use dollar amounts corresponding to my fake money ($5, $10, $20, $50, $100), which means I need 5 questions under each topics that correspond to those dollar amounts. You'll also need one final jeopardy question. I create a list of questions for each category. In order to let every student have a turn, I go around the room and give each student a chance to pick a category and dollar amount. If they answer the question correctly they get the money corresponding to that questions (Example. Computer History for $100 - Steve Jobs and Steve Woziak are responsible for the creation of which computer gaming__________?). They are allowed to pass the question with no consequence to them. However if they attempt to answer it and it is wrong, I deduct the dollar amount from them. When a question is passed- the first person to raise their hand has an opportunity to answer it. If they get it right they get the money. If they get it wrong they also lose the money. The persons with money at the end get to play final jeopardy, which is one hard question. They then get to double their money by wagering an amount. I give them a piece of paper and a pen. They write their wager amount on one side and flip the paper over and then I read the question-their answer goes on the paper. I play the jeopardy music, which I taped from the show while they are writing. At the end of the music I collect the papers. Dollar amounts are increased or decreased based on right and wrong answers. The person with the most money wins something (10 extra points on the next quiz, a free homework day pass, a cheap software prize). E-Mail Leslie Allen ! Adults, online learning, competence Academics and Education instructional design « Gillian’s Learning and Qualifications Blog Gillian’s Learning and Qualifications Blog Lifelong Learning and Qualifications About Posted by: gillp1 | March 20, 2009 Adults, online learning, competence and instructional design While working with the dynamic professionals at ArtsMatrix who act as business advisors to anyone in any of the creative arts (architecture, theatre, sculpture, music, etc) in their region, two very different academic queries were made on LinkedIn and, once again, the pernicious thought that ‘adults are different’ was put into sharp contrast with reality. Huge thanks are due to Robin Maria Pedrero who blogs , Facebooks and Twitters with ease while also painting amazing pictures . She was the first of a number of art professionals around the world who, by being there and responding to links, helped illustrate the new business tools now being deployed by ArtsMatrix . That, in turn, led to the contrast with the strangely persistent view in some quarters that academic learning using online methods is really for those under 30. Yes, the expectations of adult learners - who are often part-time - are different from those of 18 year-olds but a lot of other factors need to be taken into account. Here is a summary of some of the points made in my LinkedIn communications: Familiarity with the online environment may be a differentiator in learning online and not necessarily in favour of the younger/trad student - see Janet Clarey’s BrandonHall research summarised in her slideshow that shows factors other than age are more important. In the ArtsMatrix case, access to sufficiently highspeed internet connections for both sender and receiver was a key factor. Older learners often have a history of self-directed learning (heutagogy) even when they would not necessarily call it such. This is particularly the case in heavily competence-based formal learning programmes where adults may, of necessity, have considerable experience of ‘just finding out how to…’ There is plentiful academic research on how this affects the learning cycle (e.g. Mezirow). Regardless of whether it is online or face-to-face, broadly-speaking adults have far less tolerance of professors who do not deliver what they say, when they say or who are only two pages ahead of the class in the textbook. Time is money in a more literal sense. Networking and use of the prof’s contact list is likely to be seen as a normal activity. Resentment may be present in a way that it rarely is with those newly liberated from compulsory education. In entry-level courses, adults may be fearful and/or resentful and that means programs need careful structuring to respect us as adults not treat us as anomolous teenagers. In higher level courses, resentment can arise because professionals have been ’sent’ on a course or ‘have to’ do a Masters because the career bar has been raised since they left school. In these cases, the program and the prof really must deliver quality content and involve adults as contributing seekers of consensus/knowledge. Academics’ contact hours tend to come as a bit of a surprise. EU laws notwithstanding, businesses are expected to respond to customers, if not instantly, then at least within one day, seven days a week. So, what do you mean, the prof’s on sabbatical and the library is not open now? Simulations are a great learning tool at all levels. They are used by major business schools, corporations and NGOs the world over and can be run highly successfully at a distance and asynchronously because, after all, that is how businesses often work. However, activities that are fun but extraneous to achieving the stated course Outcomes need to be included only after very careful thought. We like fun but the business won’t run itself and the children need collecting… Poorly constructed simulations can be more ‘fun’ than learning. The ability of adult returners (online or not) to write an analytical essay rather than a business proposal can be a major stumbling block. As adults, we ‘know’ what needs doing it is easy to tell without putting in all the alternatives and balancing the arguments. On the plus side, our grasp of referencing and width of reading is often better than that of the 18 year olds - once we start doing it. Online infrastructure that does not work will lead to drop-outs with letters to the press - or mass migration to a company system that does work but breaks College/University Quality Assurance rules. Tolerance of rigid “instructional design” and pages that must be completed before continuing will be close to zero. When the first “programmed learning” courses appeared and I had to review them, some did not even let you close the program until you had got to the end. I cooked supper while the children were bribed to click through to the end. Then I could reject the programs. Today, such extremes are rare but not unknown and learning design that does not allow multiple points of entry and exit is still mostly destined for my ‘delete’ pile. There are exceptions - mostly where health and safety are involved so competence must be rigorously assessed (e.g. medicine) or building-block skills need to be acquired to allow confident and effective access to higher level courses (e.g. computer programming). Still, for the most part, learning design and adaptive scaffolding of learning opportunities lead to a richer and more creative experience for all whether student/learner or teacher, 18 or 80, employed or not, on-campus or online. Adult learners are people, too. And the Soviet Union (remember them?) announces that they will boycott the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in retaliation to the US boycotting the 1980 summer games because of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan (remember them?).New Orleans hosts its first Worlds Fair and Dell Computers is founded as PC's Limited.Ronald Reagan scared the heck out of the Democrats when during a mike check he announced "My fellow Americans, I'm pleased to tell you today that I've signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes". Two months later, he trounces Democrat nominee Walter Mondale in the general election by winning all but one state (Mondale's home state of Minnesota ) and the District of Columbia.Downbound Train- Bruce Springsteen Springsteen originally recorded this as an acoustic demo in 1982 along with the first version of "Born In The U.S.A." and most of the songs that would make up Nebraska court forms. The song is a lament to a lost spouse, and takes on a melancholy tone. The song was recorded in March or April of 1982 at the Power Station in one of the first sessions for the Born in the U.S.A.album. For me personally, it it is my favorite of his songs because of it's meaning and passion. Stay the NightChicago Chicago had long promoted itself as a "faceless" band, to let the famous Coca-Cola styled logo (and the music) do the talking. However, with the advent of the music video age, the camera would ultimately focus on the band member who sang most (if not all) of the songs, despite the presence of two other lead singers. One of the lead singers, Peter Cetera wrote this with the Canadian songwriter David Foster. In the song, Cetera is trying to convince a girl to enjoy a night of casual sex. A very memorable video was mad to accompany this song. The video has a message: if you proposition a lady stunt driver and she isn't interested, take no for an answer if you know what's good for you. In 1984, it was rare for videos to have these theatrical qualities, and this video was also unusual as it presented an ending to the song that is not apparent when listening. When the Lights Go OutNaked Eyes Naked Eyes consisted of childhood friends from Bath, England : Pete Byrne on vocals and Rob Fisher on keyboards. The two had formerly played in a band called Neon with future members of Tears for Fears and stayed together as a duo after the group broke up. Naked Eyes are one of the few to have enjoyed significant success outside their country of origin, notably in the U.S. and in Canada, yet remain almost unknown in their homeland. After breaking out a year earlier with a cover of the Burt Bacharach/Hal David standard "(There's) Always Something There to Remind Me" (Bacharach himself has cited the cover as a personal favorite and their subsequent hit "Promises, Promises," they once again charted with their third single from their eponymous debut album (known also as Burning Bridgesin their homeland) with this song. Byrne released a solo album The Real Illusionin 2001, which featured some of the last tracks he wrote with Fisher for a proposed third Naked Eyes album. Think Of LauraChristopher Cross This became famous when it was used on the Soap Opera General Hospitalas the love theme for the characters Luke and Laura, who were arguably the most well known of all Soap Opera couples. Their 1981 wedding was the highest rated episode in American Soap Opera history. Cross did not write this for the show. Laura was the best friend of a lady he was dating at the time in the early '80s. She was killed by a stray bullet while driving in a car one night, and Cross wrote this for her. About a year after the song was released on Another Page, General Hospital requested permission to use the song on their show, and it became a hit. Cross has just finished recording a new acoustic album of his hits titled The Cafe Carlyle Sessions . He is also working on a new studio album that is expected to be released in the spring of 2009. Today, he does about 100 live performances a year. 99 LuftballonsNena This was one of the songs in the '80s to make a point about the brinkmanship and paranoia/hysteria surrounding the issue of war. The song talks about Nena and the listener buying 99 Balloons in a shop and letting them go, for fun. These balloons show up on the radar as unidentified objects and both sides scramble planes and go to full alert to counteract a perceived nuclear attack, when in fact it is the most childlike of things, a bunch of balloons. Nena's real name is Gabriela Kerner. She was in a band called The Stripes before forming her own group. This was released in Germany , where Nena was from. Their record company had no intention of releasing it in America until a disc jockey at radio station KROQ in Los Angeles found a copy and started playing it. They recorded an English version (the original words are in German, and yes, "Captain Kirk" in German is still "Captain Kirk") with the title translated as "99 Red Balloons" and released it in the US , where it was a big hit. Don't Answer MeAlan Parsons Project Ammonia Avenueis one of the most commercially successful albums of The Alan Parsons Project. It was the second of the group's three most accessible albums, beginning with Eye in the Skyand ending with Vulture Culture. Ammonia Avenue was originally intended to be released as a double album with Vulture Culture's material forming the second record. The Phil Spector influenced million selling smash; "Don't Answer Me" is generally regarded as Ammonia Avenue 's best song, with the title track a close second. "Prime Time" was a follow up release that fared well in the top 40. "Since The Last Goodbye" and "You Don't Believe" were also minor hits. Music videos for "Don't Answer Me" and "Prime Time" were produced in 1985, the former with art and animation by MW Kaluta. I often seebeaten, but it takes flawless execution of a well-designed plan.The most important thing of all when selling against a much bigger competitor is to be certain that if you meet or exceed all the prospects requirements, that size—for sizes sake—does not matter. Thats an issue of qualification. You may have the best product, innovative service capabilities, committed people, stellar customer satisfaction levels, top product quality, most respected investors or anything else that you consider of value, but if size matters, little else will measure up. And if size does matter, and you cant convince your prospect fairly quickly that it shouldnt, you need to get out of there—and quickly on to another opportunity. Know your prospects history regarding doing business with smaller companies. It may mean nothing to them, since they do it all the time. On the other hand, you may be the first and may have a long, bumpy road ahead.What all this means is that there are certain opportunities for which you should not compete, because you cant win them. Sorry, but thats a fact.Now What Do You Do?Youre going to need to influence your prospects decision criteria, so that the perceived value of your competitors size as well as other size-related capabilities are diluted, neutralized or, in the best Case Management Statement, seen as a disadvantage. Many salespeople are accustomed to highlighting a competitors weaknesses. In the situations where you are competing against a bigger company, you will (professionally and subtly) dilute their strength.Here is a simple, well-proven example. Lets say I sell for a smaller professional services firm and I am up against a major player. Based upon preferences and needs of the buyers, I may decide to use theapproach.It goes like this: Ms. Prospect. There are few people who would not be impressed by my competitors size, global reach and financial as well has human resources. Im sure they proudly reference some very prominent customers. However, you might consider that a project such as yours, although highly critical for you, might very well not have the same level of importance for them and therefore may not generate the ongoing attention within executive levels of their company that their premier customers projects would. Its only naturalFrom that point, you would discuss how you would meet their technical requirements and establish a business relationship going forward, stressing attention that would be paid to the progress by your executives. Youd convince them that your companys success would depend directly on their success, not the other way around. Youll be portraying them as big fish in a small pond, with the driving message being how important their business is to you.If you are effective with this approach, you will have moved down in importance the size and impressiveness of their customer list and up in importance the attention paid to them by your executives as well as your companys interest in their success.Here are challenges you might face in a David and Goliath situation and some alternatives to consider:Challenge: The competition questions your viability to the prospect. What would happen to you, Mr. Prospect, if they were to go out of business or be acquired?Your Response: Dont wait for this to happen, as it most likely will. Immunize. Exploiting their opponents size is the first card most salesreps who sell for large companies—the Goliaths—play against the smaller guys. You need a solid story, prepared in advance - concise and compelling - which must be credibly and sincerely delivered first by you, then echoed by your most senior executives. Mitigating perceived risk is on the critical path to success when competing against a much larger rival. Dont wait.Challenge: The competition attempts to expand the scope of the evaluation into areas where you dont have a solution.Your Response: Again, pretty standard practice for the big guys. Alert your prospect in advance that this may happen. Praise their efforts in defining their requirements as well as they have. Ask if they are prepared to have the scope of their initiative, project or investment substantially expanded. If they say no, alert them that other vendors may employ thisstrategy to differentiate themselves as well as to increase the size of their contracts.Please understand that I never advocate negative selling, mud slinging or slamming the competition. On the other hand, when you have built relationships in your accounts with influential people who are willing to help you, youll need to provide them with the messages—the sound bites and talking points—to position your company advantageously.Challenge: The competition attempts to impress your prospect with hordes of resources to demonstrate their prowess and convey a safety in numbers message.Your Response: Again, prepare your prospect in advance that this may happen. Qualify them on this issue, again. Suggest that these bigger companies have extra resources on board just to impress prospects to make a sale. If you know your competitors bid will come in considerably higher than yours, you may want to subtly suggest that using resources to win business may be a reason that their overhead is so high. And, remind the prospect that if they do go with your competitor, the meter will start running.This approach is mandatory when you compete against companies who lavish prospects with toys, gifts, free trips and other goodies to try to influence their decision.Challenge: The competition, because they are bigger, is willing to guarantee results in a way that you cannot.
Your Response: They may be able to guarantee that their product will get installed (or service delivered) within a certain time, but what if they dont? The customer may not have to pay the vendor any more cash, but what about lost business opportunities, reduced customer satisfaction levels and employee morale if things go wrong? Will the guarantee cover that?Tough qualification combined with strategic competitive selling does work. After confirming that size did not matter in a face-to-face meeting with a division president of a $5 billion corporation, my client, the CEO of a small enterprise software company commanded that his team pursue a $2 million contract competing against a $750 million rival. Now there is a David and Goliath scenario.I coached that sales team during the nine month sales cycle. Among other things, we diluted the competitions apparent strengths and portrayed their large size as a liability, which in this case it really was.My clients team outsold the competition and won the business. And earned a lot more business after that, because they delivered what they promised to their customer. As the CEO related to me, elated with a contract five times larger than anything his team had secured up to that time, the most important thing for me is that this process is repeatable.[Note: The small company is DBM Systems, Inc., based in Cambridge, Ontario. The CEO was Duncan McLeod.I did not provide those details in my book.]Youve just read some suggestions on how to compete against a bigger company who uses their size and strength to win - the Goliath. Now, how do you compete against the smaller, more agile David out there who, for example, drastically discounts at the last minute to win business?Red Alert. First of all, once you learn that one of your competitors in a deal hasbusiness in the past at a price you could not (or would not) meet, your alert status should immediately shift to red.Remember, early in evaluation cycles prospects may say that price is a consideration, but not first on their list. Later on, once they have ignored or devalued any unique capabilities that your product or service can provide—to the point where they can see no measurable difference between your offering and your competitor—price gets elevated to the number one consideration. Weve all seen it happen. By that point its generally too late to remedy the situation. Youre trapped. So recognizing potential situations early on where a buyer will buy on price must become second nature.Here are some recommendations that will point you in the right direction:Qualify. In any competitive sales situation you have to monitor the prospects decision criteria like a pilot checks her instruments— ever-vigilantly. During the course of an evaluation decision criteria often change. In fact, arent we often the ones who attempt to effect that change to gain competitive advantage?Among the most critical of all decision criteria these days is price. What are the key evaluators, buyers, recommenders and decision makers requirements and expectations with regard to price today? If you are just getting engaged with a prospect and their number one decision criteria is price, you (or your management) will have to decide whether its even worth competing. Clearly, knowledge of your competitors historic actual selling price will be critical in this decision. So will an understanding of your prospects recent buying patterns with regard to price.Address the issue head on and early. Is your company going to make a decision based entirely or substantially on price?And please, make sure you are asking these questions of, and selling to, decision makers. All this matters very little to the people at lower levels in organizations.Educate yourself. Here are just some of the questions for which you need answers to outsell a competitor that dramatically discounts to win business:One client did a terrific job of figuring out that their competitors service and support resources were stretched very thin. Highlighting their own strengths in these areas pointed the prospect in the right direction. As a result of a bit of probing, the prospect found that my clients competitor couldnt appropriately support them post-sale. If they cant bring people to the party now when they are selling to us, itll only get worse if we become their customer, the prospect told our rep. Bingo.Discover And Quantify The Value. Whether or not you suspect that a low-price competitor will be included in the bidding process, youll need to quantify the value of your offering - in terms of financial return. When you are competing against someone who drastically discounts, its especially important to get close to the prospect and really understand their requirements. Not only will that enable you to better position your solution, but, more importantly, youll be able to uncover areas of potential additional value for the customer that can be derived from the differentiators that you are selling. If these differentiators are linked to financial impact for the prospect, they are not likely to become expendable nice-to-haves, eliminated from consideration in what might turn out to be a commodity buy. Even if the prospect doesnt want to or cant invest in that added value now, youve expanded their vision past what your competitor has done and have set yourself up for add-on business later.Educate and Position. Winners who are really good at competitive selling subtly but definitively alter their prospects perception that buying at the lowest price is the prudent thing to do. You can really only do this effectively when you are selling at the appropriate executive levels.Get creative. If you havent tried risk-sharing, phased deliveries, guarantees or extended warrantees or other creative approaches that will enable you to win the business without discounting, you need to do some brainstorming with your team. Very often a cash strapped competitor who has been discounting to win business falls flat on their face when asked to match such creative selling.Few of us can afford to sit back and wait for the competition to slash their price and walk away with the business. Understand your customer, your competitor, and your value. Since 1993 when EU Council Regulation 2092/91 became effective, organic farming food production has been strictly regulated in the UK.

In India, standards for organic agriculture were announced in May 2001, and the National Programme on Organic Production (NPOP) is administered under the Ministry of Commerce.

In 2002, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) established production standards, under the National Organic Program (NOP), which regulate the commercial use of the term organic. Farmers and food processors must comply with the NOP in order to use the word.
